Maine is No. 13 on the "best places to live," according to a new ranking by the personal finance site WalletHub.

The list compared states on 51 key metrics, such as housing costs, income growth, the education rate and quality of hospitals. Each factor was standardized and averaged to reveal where families are most likely to thrive.

In individual categories, Maine placed No. 8 for economy, No. 10 for safety and No. 11 for both education and health.

It had room to improve in a couple areas: Maine's lowest rank, No. 35, was for affordability. Its quality of life ranking was No. 26.

Massachusetts tops the list at No. 1, with a strong health care system, followed by Idaho, New Jersey, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

New England states ranked in top half of the U.S. in the comparison.

New Hampshire was No. 7, Vermont No. 21, Connecticut No. 24 and Rhode Island No. 25.

Overall, the worst state to live in, according to WalletHub, was New Mexico, which ranked No. 50.
