The big blue book that could: The DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer lives on

Following the March acquisition of DeLorme by the Swiss navigational giant Garmin one question remained for many Mainers: Will the legendary DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer continue to be published? Garmin officials say, yes, they will.

And very little will change about the same blue tome published for all 50 states that has guided many through our country’s redwood forests and the Gulf Stream waters.

“Because the DeLorme name is so well-known and closely associated with the unique feature set and style of the Atlas & Gazetteers, which combines digital cartography with human editing, the product line will continue under the same iconic brand and familiar appearance,” Ted Gartner, director of corporate communications for Garmin, said in a release announcing the continuing publication of the Gazetteer. “Furthermore, we will be revising and updating the atlas series in the coming years, by investing in additional resources and cartography staff based in the Yarmouth facility, formerly the DeLorme headquarters.”

Garmin says that demand continues to be high for the Gazetteer, even as digital alternatives continue to gain in power and popularity. This includes the DeLorme’s own portfolio of digital navigation products, which Garmin said was a large factor in its decision to purchase the Yarmouth-based company.

Garmin says that the atlases will continue to be sold in major retailers and bookstores, as no major distribution changes are anticipated. At the end of 2016, however, direct online sales of atlases will move from delorme.com to garmin.com.
