BIW gets $1.4B contract

Bath Iron Works yesterday received a $1.4 billion contract to build the first ship in the Navy's next class of destroyers.

BIW will start building the first of the DDG1000 Zumwalt destroyers and finish it by June 2013, according to a press release from the Navy. The contract will help BIW avoid layoffs after it completes its current project, six ships in the DDG 51 class, also known as the Arleigh-Burke family.

The Navy last July said BIW would build the first ship in the DDG 1000 class, but yesterday's announcement finalizes the contract. The Navy has plans for seven Zumwalt destroyers, with two shipyards competing for the work: BIW and Northrop Grumman Ship Systems' operation in Pascagoula, Miss. Northrop received a contract to build the second Zumwalt yesterday, the Portland Press Herald reported.
