International bridge in Calais hits snag

Canada won't agree to open a Calais international bridge and customs center by the summer of 2009, stunning United States officials.

Dane Ashlie of the Canadian Border Services Agency announced Tuesday that a plan to open the bridge early to commercial truck traffic would not move forward, according to the Bangor Daily News. The $120 million bridge and customs center will span the St. Croix River and connect Calais with St. Stephen, New Brunswick. Construction on the U.S. customs center won't be completed until Nov. 2009, but the United States and Canada had been working on a compromise to open the bridge and center to limited traffic by next summer.

Officials in Calais and St. Stephen were surprised by the announcement, and Sen. Susan Collins sent a letter to the president of the CBSA seeking answers. Collins has yet to hear back, and the paper reported that its call to Ashlie was not returned.
