BIW hearing ends without decision

A three-day hearing over allegations against BIW's largest union has ended without a decision.

A three-member panel of other regional union members has 60 days to decide whether to reinstate the officials of Local S6, a branch of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, or to allow the parent organization to continue to hold the union in trusteeship, The Times Record in Brunswick reported. The IAM took over control of Local S6 and suspended 10 of its officials last month in response to allegations of financial mismanagement and possession of pornography. All but three of those suspended officials have been reinstated.
Despite the ongoing investigation, contract negotiations between the union and the shipyard will continue, the paper reported. The current contract expires May 18.
