Guv signs drivers license bill

Governor John Baldacci last night signed a bill that tightens rules for issuing drivers licenses and ID cards.
Baldacci signed LD 2309 hours after it was approved by the House and Senate, according to a press release. The measure requires applicants for Maine drivers licenses or state ID cards to show documents that prove they live in the state. The state is adding requirements so Mainers can still use their IDs to board planes after May 15, when the federal government is adding new security measures at airports and federal buildings as part of the Real ID Act.
The bill was heavily debated in the Legislature, but in a statement, Baldacci said it should pass because the state's requirements for issuing ID cards have been "too lax."
