Senate OKs uniform building code

The Senate yesterday approved a bill to create a statewide building code.

With the Senate's 20-15 vote, both chambers of the Legislature have now approved LD 2257, "An Act to Establish a Universal Building & Energy Code", according to the Office of Legislative Information. The new Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code would replace the various building and energy codes adopted by towns with at least 2,000 residents.

The Brookings Institution recommended a universal code in its 2006 report on Maine's economy, saying that the current patchwork of building codes is confusing for developers.

The bill now goes to Gov. John Baldacci for final approval.
