Camden adopts franchise moratorium

Camden residents yesterday approved a moratorium on chain stores in the downtown.

Residents voted 230-180 in favor of the six-month moratorium that bans franchise stores downtown while the town's planning board considers adopting land-use regulations, according to VillageSoup. The moratorium proposal came after a developer proposed a Dunkin' Donuts, which sparked opposition from residents who said franchise stores could harm Camden's brand. The Dunkin' Donuts proposal was dropped last month due to opposition.

The Camden Select Board can approve extending the moratorium by another 180 days if work on revising land-use ordinances is not complete, according to VillageSoup.
