John Whitlock, who has been interim chief financial officer at Central Maine Healthcare since June, has been named the permanent CFO, the Lewiston-based health care system announced.

Whitlock, who joined CMH as vice president for finance in June 2018, "has successfully assumed all responsibilities for executive management of the system’s finance functions," CMH said in a news release.

John Whitlock has been named chief financial officer at Central Maine Healthcare in Lewiston.

“John quickly built a strong finance team, leading support of our system operations by greatly improving the depth of financial reporting and analysis,” said Jeff Brickman, CMH chief executive officer. “As the system continues to grow, his considerable experience will be a remarkable asset to Central Maine Healthcare.”

Whitlock replaces David Thompson, who resigned in June after 18 months at the post, returning to his native Colorado for business and family reasons, hospital officials said at the time. Whitlock was named to the interim position when Thompson left.

The permanent assignment is part of a rebuilding process after several years of turmoil at CMH, including no-confidence votes in 2017 from staff at its three hospitals. Brickman told Mainebiz in September that the system has reversed some of the damage.

"We’re starting to see a financial turnaround — our cash on hand has rebounded, admissions, surgeries and patient visits are up," Brickman said.

Over the past couple of years CMH has hired 118 providers and 130 nurses, its physician turnover rate has dropped from about 27% to 4%, and the system has received numerous quality awards and accreditations. It's also opened new facilities, including the Topsham Care Center.

"We’re now investing in human capital and facilities, expanding our footprint in Maine and able to start executing on our strategy and vision," Brickman said.

Whitlock was a vice president at National Church Residences in Columbus, Ohio, before joining CMH in 2018. In that role, he led a cultural shift in the organization to reposition the finance team to partner with operations, according to the release. Previously he led financial planning and analysis at Mount Carmel Health System in Columbus and held senior positions at Adena Health System in Ohio and at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.

He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration and finance from Emory University in Atlanta, and a master's in accounting from Louisiana State University.

Central Maine Healthcare includes Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston; Bridgton and Rumford hospitals; Central Maine Medical Group, a primary and specialty care practice organization; the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute; Topsham Care Center, and other services.
