Cianbro to pay welding students

Cianbro Corporation is paying prospective employees to take a 12-week welding class in anticipation of hiring welders to fill some of the 500 positions it needs to build a new manufacturing facility in Brewer.

The training wage of the day or night classes is $10 an hour with benefits. The first class begins Feb. 4 in Wilton and will enroll 24 students. The Pittsfield-based company has promised students full-time welding jobs at the Eastern Manufacturing Facility after the course is successfully completed, the Central Maine Morning Sentinel reported. "As soon as they enter the program, they are Cianbro employees," Todd Gilly, a Cianbro spokesman, told the paper. "This is a job."

The company will increase wages for welders based on skill level when they begin working at the site, Gilly told the newspaper.
