Rumford mill to cut 60 jobs

NewPage Corporation said today it is shutting down a paper machine at its Rumford mill, eliminating 60 jobs.

The company, based in Miamisburg, Ohio, on Feb. 25 will cease production on its No. 11 paper machine, the oldest and smallest of the mill's four machines, Tony Lyons, a mill spokesperson, told Mainebiz this morning. The decision is part of the company's restructuring plan following its acquisition of paper company Stora Enso North America last December, Lyons said. The shutdown means 60 of the mill's 1,050 employees will be without a job, though some of those employees will have the option of taking an early retirement incentive package, Lyons said. The company is cutting roughly 660 jobs at mills in Wisconsin, Ohio and Maine.

Despite the closure, however, the Rumford mill's annual production will not significantly change, as the mill will be producing higher weight paper of a more profitable grade, as well as producing more commercial pulp, Lyons said.
