Coast Guard confirms Google link to one mystery barge

Coast Guard officials on Wednesday at first confirmed, but later recanted, their statement that search engine giant Google is involved with a four-story structure shrouded in secrecy in San Francisco Harbor. That structure is nearly identical to one docked in Portland Harbor and both are on barges with the same owner, according to a Coast Guard registry.

The Portland Press Herald reported Coast Guard officials confirmed a Google connection to the San Francisco barge Wednesday and provided a similar statement to CNBC. Later in the day, a spokesman said the Coast Guard could neither confirm nor deny the company’s connection to the barge.

Speculation of a link to the company has heightened since a connection was discovered between the two structures on opposite coasts. Google has a patent for a floating data center that would be cooled by ocean water, a detail that has intensified the focus on the search engine giant as the possible force behind the massive projects.

Coast Guard officials in Maine told the paper some officials know the barge’s owner, but have been asked not to speak about it. Peter Vigue, chairman and CEO of Pittsfield-based Cianbro Corp., confirmed earlier this month that the company will “outfit the building with a substantial amount of technology,” but said he could not disclose the building’s owner or other details of the project.
