Construction of 66-mile natural gas pipeline begins
Summit Natural Gas of Maine has started construction of its 66-mile natural gas pipeline for the towns of Falmouth, Cumberland and Yarmouth.
The approximately $42 million investment is expected to create 200 jobs and serve around 8,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers over the next three years, according to a press release. More than 500 customers have already signed contracts with Summit. The company has projected that it will save the average homeowner approximately $1,283 a year.
The Augusta-based company was expected to celebrate the start of the pipeline’s construction with a ground-breaking event at Cumberland Fairgrounds on Friday.
Summit recently completed its 68-mile pipeline for 17 communities in the Kennebec Valley. The southern and central Maine projects represent part of Summit’s over $460 million investment in the state. Its work on 130 miles of completed pipeline and pending projects is estimated to have created more than 400 jobs in Maine.
Eric Earnest, vice president and CEO of Summit’s parent company in Littleton, Colo., told Mainebiz last year that Maine has provided some incentive plans to help customers adopt natural gas, including up to a $1,500 rebate.
