DECH receivership set to end

A two-year receivership of Down East Community Hospital is set to end following a favorable court review.

Following a hearing last week, Kennebec County Superior Court Justice Robert Murray approved ending Eastern Maine Healthcare System's receivership of the Machias hospital, according to the Bangor Daily News. Attorneys for the state and DECH told Murray that the receivership has reached its goals, prompting him to request they submit an order allowing the hospital's board of trustees to resume management of the hospital. The proposed order will likely be provided to the court as early as next week.

EMHS was given emergency control over DECH in July 2009 following complaints over governance and quality of care, as well as the high-profile death of a patient in 2008. DECH in March 2010 received a full license from the state, and in May 2010 appointed a new board of trustees to lead the hospital.
