FAA doles out $2.3M to airports

Nine Maine airports are receiving more than $2 million for safety improvements from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA is giving $2.3 million to airports across the state for safety improvements that will generate "positive, long-term economic benefits for the regions they serve," U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud said in a press release. The largest amounts will go to the Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport and Knox County Regional Airport.

The funding breakdown:

  • $650,000, Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport, to buy snow removal equipment and establish runway markings to meet current federal design standards
  • $461,600, Knox County Regional Airport, to purchase snow removal equipment and repair runways
  • $451,538, Bangor International Airport, to rehabilitate the apron
  • $268,456, Caribou Municipal Airport, to remove on-airport obstructions in the runway approach surface
  • $179,182, Machias Valley Airport, to update the existing master plan to help identify future airport needs
  • $81,110, Lincoln Regional Airport in Lincoln, to fund the design phase of the rehabilitation of a runway
  • $80,750, Dewitt Field, Old Town Municipal Airport, to rehabilitate the runway
  • $67,386, Central Maine Airport in Norridgewock, to remove obstructions on runway approach surfaces and deter unauthorized persons and vehicles from entering the airfield
  • $43,700, Sugarloaf Regional Airport in Carrabassett Valley, to rehabilitate the taxiway, runway and apron
