Fire damages submarine docked at Kittery shipyard

A fire yesterday broke out on a nuclear submarine undergoing repairs at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, injuring seven firefighters and crew members. The fire was put out this morning, but the extent of the damage has not yet been released.

The fire on the USS Miami was confined to the forward compartment, including the living quarters, command area and torpedo room, though no weapons were on board, according to the Portland Press Herald. The submarine’s nuclear power plant was not operating at the time and was protected from the blaze. The cause has not yet been determined.

Firefighters from at least three states responded. None of the seven people injured were hurt seriously. The shipyard was open for business as usual this morning.
