Peter Steele, a former newspaper publisher who later served as director of communications for former Gov. Paul LePage, has been hired as the New England regional administrator for the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Steele's appointment was announced in a press release on Thursday, though he assumed the role in February.
The job was previously held by U.S. Sen. Sandra Cano, D-R.I.
Steele is a seasoned communications strategist with extensive experience in government, corporate and media relations. Most recently, he served as senior manager of corporate communications at Sappi North America, which has a facilities in Skowhegan and Westbrook and offices in Portland.
In President Donald Trump's first term, Steele served as the regional representative for the U.S. Secretary of Labor, where he played a role in guiding New England states through workforce and economic recovery initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic.
For LePage, a Republican, he managed strategic messaging, media relations and crisis communications.
Steele, who grew up on Cape Cod, Mass., in a newspaper family, founded and grew Auburn-based Twin City Times. He also held other editorial leadership positions at the South End News in Boston and the Provincetown Advocate in Provincetown, Mass. He received a bachelor's degree from Colby College.
