Former prison redevelopment advances

Thomaston's redevelopment committee on Tuesday approved plans to anchor the redevelopment of the site of the former Maine State Prison with an assisted living facility.

The Thomaston Redevelopment Committee approved developer Lon Walters' plan to build a $15 million assisted living facility on four or five acres of the 15.6-acre town-owned lot, Town Manager Valmore Blastow told Mainebiz this morning. The facility is expected to create 75 jobs, Blastow said.

Walters' properties would anchor the town's master plan for 10-11 acres at the site, which the town will consider at a public hearing April 14, Blastow said. The plan, created by the Developers Collaborative of Portland, calls for multi-family housing, shops and a YMCA in addition to the senior housing.
