Kibby Mountain gets final approval

The Land Use Regulation Commission yesterday gave final approval to TransCanada's $250 million Kibby Mountain wind project.

If built, TransCanada's 132-megawatt wind farm in western Maine would be the largest in New England, with the potential to generate enough electricity annually to power about 50,000 Maine homes, according to Portland news station WCSH 6. TransCanada, based in Alberta, could begin construction at the site as early as next month, according to the news station.

Meanwhile, LURC also unanimously approved the second hut in Maine Huts & Trails' proposed 180-mile, 12-hut recreation corridor to be built in western Maine over the next five to seven years, according to a press release from the organization. Construction on the second hut, on Flagstaff Lake in Kingfield, will begin this summer.
