From gear to granola: Online shop showcases Maine brands

In time for the holiday shopping season, Maine Outdoor Brands has opened an online store featuring products from artisanal axes made by South Portland’s Brant & Cochran to granola by Grandy Organics in Hiram.

The MOB Web Shop features 25 member brands and close to 200 products. They include technical gear and trail-ready apparel as well as specialty foods, home goods and outdoor-inspired art, along with MOB merch from Sea Bags, Pinebury and a host of others. The effort builds on an in-store branding initiative launched with select retailers earlier this year.

The e-commerce site, at maineoutdoorbrands, shop, is touted as a one-stop shop for consumers to discover and support Maine’s outdoor business community.

A portion of every sale from the online store supports the work of Maine Outdoor Brands, a Portland-based trade alliance founded in 2017 that has grown to more than 200 members.

“The MOB Web Shop creates a new digital sales channel for member companies, introduces them to a wider audience of outdoor enthusiasts and conscious consumers and establishes a new revenue stream to help fund MOB’s ongoing program,” said Jenny Kordick, executive director of Maine Outdoor Brands and a 2023 Mainebiz 40 Under 40 honoree.

“We're continuing to double down on our charge to elevate Maine-based outdoor entrepreneurs, strengthen the state's economic resilience and help consumers connect with the stories and people behind the gear they trust,” she added.

Strong start

In the first week, Maine Outdoor Brands merchandise and several member products have already seen sales, Kordick told Mainebiz.

“The web shop grew out of what we’ve heard from our community: people often come to MOB to discover new Maine brands, and around the holidays, many visit our website looking for local businesses to support,” she noted. “It also builds on our successful in-person efforts — from collaborative booths at trade shows around the country to in-store MOB Shops across Maine.”

This coming weekend, for example, the group will head to the Boston Snowboard Expo with nine brands.

All of those efforts, she said, aim to bring Maine brands together under one banner to make it easier for customers and buyers to connect while helping member companies gain recognition and make the most of their shared connection to Maine and to each other.

“The web shop is the next step in that evolution, providing a digital space where people can discover and shop directly from local brands,” she said.
