Fryeburg Water Co. seeks Nestle contract renewal

Maine's Public Utilities Commission will soon make a decision on whether the Fryeburg Water Co. can extend its contract with Nestle Waters, the international parent company of Poland Spring, for access to the town's water.

MPBN reported the Fryeburg Water Co. hopes to extend that contract for another 25 years with four five-year extension options beyond that, a deal that would lock in payments and rules for Nestle to withdraw water for its Poland Spring water.

During a hearing in Augusta on Friday, the PUC heard opinions from supporters and opponents of the deal. Opponents challenged the long-term nature of the proposed contract and questioned how it might impact Fryeburg and neighboring towns served by the privately owned water company.

Poland Spring pumps water from more than 20 wells in eight Maine communities and has bottling plants in Hollis, Poland Spring and Kingfield.
