Good Shepherd Food Bank picked up $2 million for its anti-hunger campaign after an anonymous donor's $1 million matching challenge was successfully met, according to the Auburn-based nonprofit organization.

The matching gift was largely achieved via donors in Boothbay Harbor.

The $2 million brings the Auburn-based organization closer to its goal of raising $250 million in its Campaign to End Hunger, announced in January 2021.

In a news release, Good Shepherd said it has raised nearly $170 million in food and funds to date as the need for food soars during the pandemic. Before the end of 2025, the organization aims to raise $100 million in cash and pledges and $150 million in donated food.

“We are incredibly grateful for the leadership support from this generous donor who is investing in the future of our state and encouraging others to do the same,” said Kristen Miale, president of Good Shepherd Food Bank and a 2020 Mainebiz Business Leader of the Year honoree.

“We’re inspired by the donor’s trust and confidence, and by so many supporters across the state who are rallying to ensure all Mainers have access to enough healthy food, today and in the future."

The donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, is an Auburn native and University of Maine graduate.

“Good Shepherd Food Bank is working with more than 500 partners around the state to ensure all Mainers have access to healthy food today, and they have a vision, strategies, and key partnerships in place to address the root causes of hunger and provide long-term solutions,” the donor said in a statement shared by Good Shepherd Food Bank.

“Their partnerships with other organizations that are solving housing, health care, job training and financial literacy issues are particularly impressive to me.”

Last fiscal year, Good Shepherd Food Bank distributed a record 31.6 million meals to an estimated 182,000 Mainers experiencing hunger.

Even with that contribution, the organization estimates that as many as 40 million meals could be missing from Mainers plates each year, leaving a gap of more than eight million meals to fill annually.

Good Shepherd Food Bank aims to remedy the situation by investing in greater food distribution and by advocating for policies and public/private partnerships that bolster the safety net and address the root causes of hunger and poverty.

Established in 1981, Good Shepherd Food Bank has annual revenue of close to $69.6 million, including $47.9 million in in-kind food donations, as reported in the latest annual Mainebiz Giving Guide published in September.
