Every three months, Oakhurst Dairy releases a limited-edition seasonal offering to keep things moo-ving and shaking in the supermarket dairy aisle.

In February, the cooperative-owned company based in Portland released Mint Chip Madness Flavored Whole Milk in collaboration with the Maine Celtics basketball team.

With baseball season in full swing, Oakhurst has joined forces with the Portland Sea Dogs to promote Field of Creams — Cookies and Cream Flavored Whole Milk.

The name is a nod to “Field of Dreams,” the 1989 film starring Kevin Costner, for a throwback flavor combo that pairs whole milk with vanilla cream and chocolate chip cookies.

“We’ve been doing seasonal rotators for quite some time, and have been trying to do more with the local teams that we’re affiliated with,” Mark Page, general manager of Oakhurst Dairy, told Mainebiz in a phone interview.

“The timing is perfect with baseball season getting underway, and it will hopefully bring in some new customers,” he added. “If it catches the eye of some people that haven’t purchased Oakhurst in the past, that will be fantastic.”

Oakhurst is owned by Dairy Farmers of America, a national milk marketing cooperative based in Kansas City, Mo.

Field of Creams, which debuted on May 1, is available at Hannaford, Market Basket and other retailers across Maine and New Hampshire through the end of June. The pint retails at $1.99, while the quart is priced at $2.99.

Oakhurst said that while it's too early to report on how sales are going, the initial response has been positive.

For Oakhurst and the Sea Dogs, the collaboration builds on decades-long relationship.

“Oakhurst has been one of our most loyal partners having been with us since our inaugural season in 1994,” Chris Cameron, the team’s vice president for communications and fan experience, told Mainebiz.

“It’s a unique way for us to continue to market the ballclub to our target audience of kids and families throughout Maine.”

The collaboration also builds on a friendship between Slugger the Sea Dog and Oakie, Oakhurst Dairy's smiling yellow mascot.

“Oakie is one of Slugger’s oldest friends, having met in 1994,” Cameron said. “Over the years they have attended many community events together. Slugger also enjoys having Oakie come to the ballpark for playdates where they especially enjoy playing musical chairs together.”

Events

Although the Field of Cream milk products won’t be sold at the Sea Dogs' home stadium, two ballpark events are planned as part of the promotion.

They include game-day giveaways on Friday, May 9, and Maine Dairy Day fun featuring Oakie in honor of the state's dairy farmers on Saturday, June 8.
