Harbor Technologies in Brunswick announced at a press conference on bridge technologies in Orono this morning that it is growing as a result of composite innovations developed in partnership with the University of Maine.
The marine-products company has been working with the UMaine AEWC Advanced Structures & Composites Center for several years on composite beam technology for bridge girders, which consists of stay-in-place composite forms that are filled with concrete at the site to make straight bridge girders, according to Joe Carr at the University of Maine. The technology is separate from the "bridge in a backpack" composite technology that Advanced Infrastructure Technologies, a new spin-off company in Orono, will commercialize.
Harbor Technologies will use the technology to construct a bridge this summer in Maine, and will add 20 related positions this spring and summer. The company is also looking at pilings and bridge contracts nationally with potential job growth in excess of 100 new positions.
