Health care providers to start listing their price

Starting Jan. 1, health care providers in Maine will be required to provide patients a list showing how much their most common procedures would cost a person without health insurance.

The Bangor Daily News reported the law that passed during the past legislative session requires a wide range of health care providers, from chiropractors to hospital internists, to inform patients about the list and provide copies if requested. The law replaced an earlier requirement that required the posting of prices. Gordon Smith, executive vice president of the Maine Medical Association, told the paper that many members did not follow that law in the 10 years after its passage.

Although the law takes effect Jan. 1, Smith told the paper that MMA and the Maine Hospital Association are working with the bill’s sponsor, Independent Sen. Dick Woodbury of Yarmouth, to amend the law to further limit the number of procedures listed. The law now requires listing of any procedures performed more than 50 times a year.
