How Maine could be affected if Trump cuts funds for climate research

President-elect Donald Trump’s vow to scale back research funding for some NASA programs is ruffling feathers in Maine, the Christian Science Monitor reported.

Some key Maine institutions — the University of Maine, the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences — rely on NASA’s satellite data.

The state has been a hub for climate research, but without input from NASA, research initiatives in areas like marine algae monitoring and analysis of melting sea ice could falter, the Monitor reported.

“If we lose these data sets and capabilities, that will be a major loss to us being able to monitor and track changes here in Maine and in other areas that impact us,” Andrew Thomas, a professor of oceanography at the University of Maine’s School of Marine Sciences, told the Portland Press Herald earlier this week.
