Jackson Lab seeks OK for expansion
Jackson Laboratory is seeking approval from Bar Harbor's planning board for a 16,500-square-foot expansion of its parking lot and a 700-square-foot addition to its maintenance building at its main facility.
The Mt. Desert Islander reports the proposed parking lot expansion, which would provide 40 new spaces, is part of the nonprofit genetics research lab's master plan to move all parking and auto traffic from the center of its Bar Harbor campus to the back. The planning board is expected to review the application at its July 11 meeting.
Last month, Jackson Lab received an OK from the Ellsworth Planning Board for the zoning change it needs in order to transform a vacant Lowe's store in Ellsworth into a research facility that is expected to employ between 200 and 300 people within a decade. The Ellsworth City Council also must endorse the zoning change, which would expand the types of activities allowed in a research facility located in the C-2 commercial zone around the building, located just off Route 3, that Lowe's closed last November.
