January jobless rate down over the year

Maine’s unemployment rate was 7% in January, down from 8% one year ago, according to the Maine Department of Labor. The rate, however, was unchanged from December.

The number of unemployed totaled 49,500, down 6,500 from a year ago. There were 596,800 nonfarm payroll jobs in January, up 5,200 over the month.

The U.S. unemployment rate was 8.3%, down from 8.5% in December and 9.1% one year ago. The New England average was 7.2%; rates in other states in the region were 5.2% in New Hampshire, 5.0% in Vermont, 6.9% in Massachusetts, 10.9% in Rhode Island and 8.0% in Connecticut.
