Learning curve

Know any good pipefitters with a yen to help Maine's economy?

I ask because in a postscript to the story “Training options," where we examine the Maine Quality Centers training program, I asked Leah Buck, the overseer of the program at Northern Maine Community College, whether she could accommodate a request to provide pipefitter training. The request came from managers at K-Pel Industries, a Fort Fairfield-based contractor whose business has heated up because of conversion projects related to the availability of compressed natural gas. The company hired three new employees, and wants to hire three more, if it can find prospects with basic pipefitting skills.

Leah told me she wishes she could, but she's having a hard time finding an instructor. Hence my plea. Other Maine companies are experiencing difficulties in finding properly trained people for computer science and IT positions, which Senior Writer Jim McCarthy explores in “Trial by fire." Jim looks at the intersection of corporate intern programs and Project>Login as a means to supply companies with tech-savvy Maine recruits. Both stories are part of this issue's focus on education and training.

As for lessons in leadership, I suggest you read our Women to Watch profiles. These are remarkable executives, and each has wisdom and insight to share. Prepare to be inspired.
