Legislators want profitable prisons

Several Maine lawmakers have requested a study to examine whether the Maine State Prison in Warren could earn more money selling wooden items made by inmates, according to the Portland television station WCSH6.

Rep. Pat Blanchette (D-Bangor) wants the state to hire experts to write a business plan for the jail. The Prison Industries Program, in which inmates craft wooden objects to sell at the prison's Thomaston showroom, costs $1 million more than it earns.

Maine State Prison Warden Jeffrey Merrill told WCSH6 he welcomes marketing advice and possible product changes to make the program more lucrative.
