L.L.Bean shutters Oxford call center

L.L.Bean won't open its seasonal call center in Oxford this fall, eliminating 250 temporary jobs, the Sun Journal in Lewiston reported today.

The Freeport retailer won't open its Route 26 call center because of the slowing economy and because its website sales are increasing, the paper reported. The company has operated the seasonal call center for the past four years for six to eight weeks during the holiday season.

L.L.Bean will retain its lease on the property in case it decides to re-open the center in the future, Carolyn Beem, a company spokesperson, told the paper.
