Maine AFL-CIO elects first woman president

The Maine AFL-CIO at its convention Friday in Bangor elected its first woman president, Cynthia Phinney, a meter reader for Central Maine Power Co.

The labor organization previously had another woman serve as president, Gwen Gatcomb, who wasn’t elected but became interim president after Charles O'Leary stepped down in January of 1999, according to the organization.

Phinney of Livermore Falls is a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1837.

The organization, the state’s largest labor federation, is comprised of 160 local unions representing more than 40,000 workers from across Maine.
