Maine home sales continue upward surge

The market for existing single-family homes in the state continues to be strong, as 1,732 homes were sold in Maine during September for a 6.13% increase from the prior year, according to the most recent report from the Maine Association of Realtors.

The median sales price for homes sold also experienced a 1.4% increase from the year before to $188,038.

The National Association of Realtors the same day reported that nationwide, existing single-family homes sales rose 0.6%, with a median sales price of $235,700, up 5.6% over the past 12 months.

“Early autumn statistics show continued stability in most markets across Maine,” Ed Gardner, 2016 president of the Maine Association of Realtors, said in a statement. “Should sellers take their homes off the market and wait through the holidays? No. Life circumstances bring a steady stream of buyers into the marketplace. Colder weather tends to bring out the more serious buyers and investors who want to take advantage of tax benefits prior to year-end."

For the second month in a row, Franklin County saw the biggest increase in sales of more than 45% to 141 homes, up from 97 last September.

Washington County topped the median price with $1000,000, up 25% from last year.
