Maine Medical Center's board of trustees today named Richard W. Petersen as the new CEO of Maine's largest hospital.

After a nationwide search that produced many qualified candidates, the hospital's CEO Search Committee unanimously chose Petersen to lead the hospital, which has nearly 6,000 employees, according to a hospital press release. Petersen, 53, has served as the hospital's interim president and CEO since Vince Conti stepped down from the post a year ago. Petersen will assume his new duties immediately.

Before taking over as interim CEO, Petersen was chief operating officer at the hospital for 10 years. Petersen began his healthcare career in 1978 as an assistant administrator at a small hospital in New York, the press release said.
