Maine unemployment rate lowest since 2001

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that Maine’s unemployment rate hit its lowest point in over a decade in January, dropping by 3.8% across the state from the 4.9% estimate of one year ago.

The drop in unemployment puts Maine’s unemployment rate below both the national average of 4.9% and New England average of 4.7%.

Maine’s jobless rates for January were lower than other states in the region including Massachusetts’ rate of 4.7% and Connecticut’s rate of 5.2%. Only New Hampshire and Vermont had lower rates of unemployment with 3.1% and 3.6%, respectively.
