MaineGeneral plans new hospital

MaineGeneral Medical Center yesterday sent a letter of intent to the state to get the ball rolling on its planned $322 million consolidation of its inpatient services at a yet-to-be-built hospital in Augusta.

The new MaineGeneral Inpatient Regional Hospital would be constructed near the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care in north Augusta, and will be ready to accept patients in 2015, the Kennebec Journal reported, citing the organization's letter of intent. MaineGeneral plans to submit a full application to state regulators by Dec. 22.

The project also includes renovations to the Thayer campus in Waterville to accommodate increased outpatient services, which will be transferred from MaineGeneral's existing hospital on East Chestnut Street in Augusta, a hospital spokesman told Mainebiz. All other services from the existing Augusta hospital will be moved to the new facility. The Thayer campus will also retain its emergency room, the spokesman said.

MaineGeneral employs more than 3,500 people, with an annual payroll of $136 million. Construction of the new hospital and renovations are expected to support 352 jobs, but 60 fewer employees will be needed after the consolidation, the paper reported. Some 360 hospital jobs will be relocated to Augusta from Waterville.
