Minimum wage rises to $7.50

Maine's minimum wage rises a quarter today to $7.50 per hour, putting a little more money in the pockets of the state's roughly 26,000 low-wage workers.

"By increasing the minimum wage, we are taking a small step in providing our lowest paid workers with a greater ability to support themselves and their families," Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman said in a press release. Some employers, including restaurants, are exempt from paying the minimum wage. Tipped employees can be paid half the minimum wage, as long as their employer makes up the difference when tips plus the hourly wage falls short of the minimum wage, the release states.

Nearly 75% of workers earning the minimum wage or less are older than age 19, and 24% work full time or more, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
