MaineToday owner tops political donor list

S. Donald Sussman, the owner of the Portland Press Herald and three other newspapers, is Maine's top individual donor to state and national political campaigns.

An analysis by the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting found that MaineToday Media owner Sussman, of North Haven, has donated $2.97 million to political campaigns since Jan. 1, 2013, just over 75% of the $3.95 million donated by all 10 of Maine's top donors.

Sussman, who is founder of hedge fund Pamola Partners and husband of U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine), is trailed by:

• Ed Bosarge, of Southport, a former IBM and NASA scientist and co-founder of Quantlab Financial ($180,000);

• Paul Coulombe, of Southport, former principal of White Rock Distilleries and owner of Boothbay Harbor Country Club ($162,875);

• Pingree, of North Haven, co-owner of Turner Farm ($121,653).

Other top donors include Portland developer Cyrus Hagge, Diversified Communications board chairman Daniel Hildreth, Sydney Roberts Rockefeller, best-selling author Stephen King and Maine Senate President Justin Alfond.

The MCPIR analysis found that eight of the 10 top political donors support Democrats almost exclusively. Bosarge and Coulombe are the only Republican donors.
