May home sales in Maine increased 44% from the month before, but were still 9.5% less than the number of homes sold in May 2008, according to the Maine Association of Realtors.
There were 877 Maine single-family homes sold in May, compared to 610 sold in April 2009 and 969 sold in May 2008. Maine's statewide median sales price decreased 12%, from $182,000 in May 2008 to $160,000 last month. Knox County was the only county in the state that experienced an increase in the median sales prices, increasing nearly 7% to $198,500.
In the Northeast, sales were down 10% and the regional median sales price decreased 12.5% to $243,600. Nationally, May saw a 3% drop in single-family existing home sales from the same month last year, and the national median sales price for homes decreased 16% to $172,900 during the same period.
