MCCS enrollment up 10%

Enrollment at Maine's community colleges rose 9.6% this fall, an increase of 1,576 students.

Total enrollment for the Maine Community College System was 17,967 this fall, up from 16,391 last fall, according to a press release from MCCS. The system has also seen a 21% increase in enrollment in the past two years. The largest enrollment growths are at York Community College in Wells, which saw a 16.3% increase, Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield, with a 12.5% increase, and Southern Maine Community College in South Portland, where enrollment rose 11.4%.

MCCS President John Fitzsimmons celebrated the news but said in the release that the system "[does] not have the capacity to serve all those who want to enroll." In response, the Foundation for Maine's Community Colleges launched a fundraising campaign with a goal of raising a minimum of $10 million.
