Monhegan gets electricity grid grant

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded Monhegan Island a $420,000 grant to improve its electricity grid.

The funds will support the installation of a solar panel system, a generator and a switching unit that will allow transition between various power sources.

U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree announced the award, given to rural communities where the cost of electricity is high, in a statement Wednesday.

Island residents there pay around 70 cents per kilowatt hour, over four times the price on the mainland, the release states.
