New gambling board head appointed

Patrick Fleming, the former state police chief, is now head of the Gambling Control Board.

Fleming began his new job today, one day after retiring as State Police chief colonel, according to the Portland Press Herald. Fleming succeeds Robert Welch, who was hired in 2004 to lead the new agency that oversees the state's gambling facilities and resigned last month to become a lieutenant at the University of Maine Police Department. Fleming, who previously managed the gaming and licensing division, will oversee the application process for Black Bear Entertainment's proposed casino resort in Oxford, and enforce existing casino rules.

The board on Friday voted unanimously to support Fleming's appointment.
