Newsworthy people and performances for June 10, 2019

New hires

Bar Harbor Savings and Loan hired David Cohen as senior vice president and treasurer. Cohen was previously senior vice president and manager of accounting operations at Bar Harbor Bank and Trust.

Northeast Bank in Portland hired Suzanne Cange as banking center manager. Cange was branch manager at Evergreen Credit Union in Portland.

IIS Financial Services, an independent financial planning firm in South Portland, hired Cara Keller as a registered client service associate, Zach Wielgoszinski as an employer retirement coordinator and education specialist and Bethany Sharbaugh as office administrator and marketing assistant. Keller was previously with T. Rowe Price, Wielgoszinski was with Fidelity and Sharbaugh with Boston Mutual.

Rudman Winchell, a law firm in Bangor, hired Michael Hockenbury to practice with the firm’s corporate and business practices group.

Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce in Waterville hired Courtney Squire as marketing and development coordinator.

First National Bank and its parent company, First Bancorp in Damariscotta, hired Barbara Dangler as branch manager in Bangor.

Sunday River Resort in Newry hired Jerry Roman as head golf pro for the Sunday River Golf Club. Roman was general manager and head golf pro at Hidden River Golf & Casting Club in Brutus, Mich.

RE/MAX Shoreline in Portland hired Rachel Moyse as a commercial and residential broker.

Maine Department of Health and Human Services hired Nirav Shah as director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Shah was previously director of the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Promotions

Katahdin Trust in Houlton promoted Susan McCarthy to vice president, manager and commercial services officer for Maine Financial Group, an affiliate located in Scarborough and specializing in equipment financing. McCarthy was previously vice president.

Robinson Smith Wealth Advisors LLC, a provider of investment and financial advisory services in Portland, made Tracey Daigle an equity owner in the firm. Daigle, who has been with the company for 10 years, serves as a financial advisor, manager of service and operations and the firm’s chief compliance officer.

Appointments

Glen Holmes, president of Community Concepts Finance Corp. in Paris, was appointed to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Housing Counseling Federal Advisory Committee. The committee consists of 12 individuals that represent the mortgage and real estate industry, consumers and HUD-approved housing counseling agencies.

Gov. Janet Mills nominated Patricia Riley and Timothy Doak to the University of Maine System board of trustees. Riley has served as CEO of the Center for Health Policy Development and the National Academy for State Health Policy for five years while Doak has served as superintendent of schools for RSU 39 and MSAD 20 for seven years.

United Way of York County in Kennebunk added Susan Austin, MSAD 60; Lynn Brandsma, University of New England; Jud Knox, York Hospital; and Don Lary, Unum, to its board of directors. The organization also announced its board officers for 2019-20: Chris Indorf, Biddeford & Dayton School Department, chair; Todd Cesca, Charter Oak Capital Management, vice chair; Brian Ballute, Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution, treasurer; Paige Streeter, Libby Kingsley O’Brien & Champion, secretary; and Chrissie Stevens, Southern Maine Health Care, ethics officer.

Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce announced Jillian Kanter as board president for PROPEL, the chamber’s young professionals group. Kanter is marketing and communications specialist at Verrill Dana LLP, a law firm in Portland.

Jeff Shaw, president of Clark Insurance, was sworn in as chairman elect of the Maine Insurance Agents Association and will serve as president starting in April 2020.

Knox County Homeless Coalition in Rockport said Executive Director Stephanie Primm was elected chair of the Statewide Homeless Council. Primm’s two-year appointment was effective May 20.

FHC Inc., a Bowdoin-based manufacturer of products for the neuroscience industry, announced that Andrew Haer was named chairman of the board as of May 15. Haer joined the company in 2014 as director of business development and most recently served as director of customer collaboration.

Achievements

GHM Insurance Agency in Waterville was one of 120 agencies nationwide selected for the Hanover Insurance Group’s President’s Club, a select group of agencies recognized for delivering outstanding value to their customers through their insurance expertise and responsive service.

Brian Perkins of Dirigo Strategies LLC, a firm in Thomaston that provides consulting advice to medium and large companies seeking to sell products and services to navies and coast guards in the U.S., Canada and Scandinavia, attended the Canadian Association of Defense and Securities trade show held in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Damariscotta Region Chamber of Commerce announced its annual award winners including Billy Clafflin, “Individual Community Service Award;” Renys, “Organization Community Service Award;” Shuck Station, “Business Enhancement Award;” and John and Freida Hanlon, “Business Person of the Year Award.”

Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington named Tiffany Kelvey, Kathryn Hargreaves and Laura Ward as recipients of its “Excellence in Nursing Award.” In addition, Kaylee Abbott, a respiratory therapist, was declared honorary nurse for the support she gives to nursing staff. The hospital also said it received a ‘B’ in The Leapfrog Foundation’s Hospital Safety Grades report and that April Paradis earned the Oncology Certified Nurse credential from the Oncology Nursing Certification Corp.

Northern Light Mercy Hospital in Portland and Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford received an ‘A’ grade for meeting the highest safety standards in the country in The Leapfrog Foundation’s Hospital Safety Grades report.

Patrons Oxford Insurance in Portland announced that Audrey Machowski earned a Certified Insurance Counselor designation from the National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research. Machowski is a commercial lines underwriter with the firm.

Knickerbocker Group in Boothbay received a “Special Citation for Adaptive Reuse, Residential Category” and was voted a “People’s Choice Award” winner for its Stoneview Barn project at the 2019 AIA Maine Design Awards.

Allen Insurance and Financial in Camden said Anna Moorman received the “Silver Award for Medicare Sales” for her work with Anthem in 2018. Moorman, who specializes in Medicare insurance, placed eighth out of 181 brokers for top sales and seventh for Medicare Supplement Sales in the state of Maine.

Katie Briggs, senior human resources operations specialist at Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, earned her Certified Payroll Professional designation offered through the American Payroll Association.

The Maine District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration named the Maine Technology Institute in Brunswick its “2019 Financial Services Champion of the Year.” Other award winners included: “Maine and New England Home Based Business of the Year,” Katheryn Langelier, Herbal Revolution Farm & Apothecary LLC, Union; “Maine Jeffrey Butland Family Owned Business of the Year,” Wade and Susan Kelly, Tylor Kelly Camps, Allagash; “Maine Small Business Exporter of the Year,” Kathleen O’Heron, Jynx Productions LLC, Yarmouth; “Maine Woman Owned Small Business of the Year,” Amber Elliott, Alternative Wellness Services, Biddeford; “Maine Young Entrepreneur of the Year,” Tyler Frank, Garbage to Garden, Portland; “Maine Veteran Owned Small Business of the Year,” Brian Warren, The Village Woodworker, Oxford; “Maine Minority Owned Small Business of the Year,” Ahmed Abbas, Ameera Bread LLC, Portland; “Maine Micro-Enterprise of the Year,” Jill Miller, The Maine Pie Co., Biddeford; and “Maine Small Business Manufacturer of the Year,” Rebecca and Troy Delano, Alfred’s Upholstery & Co., Alfred.

Southworth International Group Inc. in Falmouth said it was one of six private company boards honored for its business governance excellence at the 2019 Private Company Governance Summit held in Washington, D.C.

Berman & Simmons, a law firm in Lewiston, announced that attorney Benjamin Gideon was admitted to the Inner Circle of Advocates, an invitation-only, national organization of plaintiff attorneys. The group limits its membership to no more than 100 of the top plaintiff trial lawyers in the nation. Gideon is only the second lawyer in Maine history to be invited to join this group.

Verrill Dana, a law firm in Portland, announced it was rated as a “Leading Firm” in seven main categories and five subcategories as evaluated by London-based Chambers & Partners, a legal research and publishing firms. In addition, the firm said 28 of its Maine-based lawyers were acknowledged as “Leading Lawyers.”

Shipbuilders Council of America, a national trade association, named U.S. Sen. Susan Collins as a 2019 recipient of its “Maritime Leadership Award.”

NorthStar, the ambulance service of Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, named Carol Tibbetts its “EMT of the Year.” In addition, recognition for “Beyond the Call” awards went to Wade Browne, Cassandra Clark, Steve Smith, Rod Koehn, Justin Hurlburt and Jared Stinson. Clark, a paramedic and supervisor in Farmington, was also named the “Maine EMS Merit Award” winner by Maine EMS.

Skelton Taintor & Abbott, a law firm in Auburn, said attorney Jordan Payne Hay spoke at the Jay, Livermore, Livermore Falls Chamber of Commerce’s June breakfast meeting. Hay presented the most up-to-date information about minimum wage requirements, overtime rules and different pay structures and employee classification.

Maine Academy of Family Physicians named Julia McDonald “Maine’s 2019 Family Physician of the Year” award winner. McDonald is a faculty member at the Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency who sees patients at the Family Medicine Institute.

Jeff Lind, COO at Clark Insurance in Portland, was presented with the “Lee Allen Award” by the Institutes’ Maine CPCU Society Chapter. The award is presented to individuals within the local CPCU Society that display a high level of dedication and contribution to the Maine insurance industry.
