Newsworthy people and performances for Sept. 2, 2019

New hires

WordLab, a communications apprenticeship program started by Linda Varrell of Broadreach Public Relations in Portland, hired as client associates Katherine Hulit, Brian Lee, Kyle Walton, Glendon Zernicke, Sacha Kiesman, Scott Michael and Lauren Whitney.

Bernstein Shur, a law firm in Portland, hired Bryce Morrison as a member of the firm’s business law and tax law practice groups where he will focus on all manner of business and tax matters, such as corporation, LLC and partnership setup, subsidiaries and branch offices setup for foreign companies doing business in the U.S.

Franklin Health Orthopedics in Farmington added Raymond White and Lincoln Avery as orthopedic surgeons through a service partnership with Maine Medical Partners Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. White specializes in orthopedic trauma and fracture care while Avery provides treatment for a wide variety of orthopedic and sports-related injuries.

Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park hired Sarah Hooper as education specialist. Hooper was previously a teacher and leader of the science department at the Bosque School in Albuquerque, N.M.

OTLECO, a wireline telecommunications company in New Gloucester, hired Robert Boyorak and Mark Houde as technical support technicians in Bangor.

Great Works Internet in Biddeford hired Christopher Caiazzo as director of customer operations. Caiazzo is also a member of the 129th Legislature, representing Scarborough.

Maine Medical Partners in Portland announced several new hires including Melanie Rand as a member of the weight and wellness program at Maine Medical Center; Crystal Fox, Benjamina Razsa and Raymond Klein joined Maine Medical Partners in hospital medicine; Amy Buczkowski, Maine Medical Partners, pediatric hospital medicine; Richard Royal, Maine Medical Partners, surgical care, in the division of surgical oncology; Rena Paris, Maine Medical Center, department of psychiatry; Brock Libby, Maine Medical Partners, South Portland Pediatrics; and Jason Moran, Maine Medical Partners, medical oncology.

White Pine Programs, a nature-based youth leadership organization in York, hired Heather Campbell as executive director. Campbell, who served on the organization’s board, was previously director of North American marketing at Bottomline Technologies.

The Diocese of Portland hired Denis Lafreniere Jr. as director of its office of property management. Lafreniere also serves as the business coordinator of the Portland Peninsula and Island Parishes.

First National Bank and its parent company, First Bancorp in Damariscotta, hired Sarah Dubay as business development officer in Ellsworth and James Ouellette as staff accountant in Damariscotta.

Diversified Communications, an international media company in Portland, hired Dana Guth as sales and marketing coordinator and Nicole Mathuin as analytics coordinator. Guth previously worked at Trident Booksellers & Café in Boston, while Mathuin was with CIEE in Portland.

Camden Financial Consultants hired Ryan Willette as financial consultant, serving the Downeast market. Willette, who has 15 years of banking experience, was previously a wealth management associate for Morgan Stanley in Bangor.

Emergent Holdings, the parent company of Whole Oceans, which is developing a state-of-the-art land-based salmon aquafarm in Bucksport, hired Justin Hankins as vice president of finance. Hankins has 13 years of experience in agriculture-related finance.

Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor hired Miguel Lorenzo Litao as a member of Northern Light Neurology. Litao has board certifications from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in neurology and vascular neurology.

Promotions

Maine Community Foundation in Ellsworth promoted Laura Lee to director of grant making. Lee was previously a senior program officer.

Biobased Maine, a trade association in Portland promoting the sustainable use of renewable biomass from forests, farm and sea, promoted Marina Bowie to executive director. She was previously program associate.

U.S. Sen. Angus King announced that Jack Faherty shifted his role from Maine press secretary to a position on the senator’s legislative team with a focus on foreign policy and military affairs. In addition, Jeff Sobotko, previously press secretary and director of digital media, now serves as deputy communications director.

Appointments

Gov. Janet Mills appointed Bonnie Martinolich to the Maine Animal Welfare Advisory Council. Martinolich, partner at Preti Flaherty, is one of 14 members statewide selected for their experience and knowledge in matters of animal welfare in Maine.

Androscoggin Home Healthcare + Hospice in Lewiston added James Joseph, Paul Andersen and Phillip Crowell Jr. to its board of directors. Joseph is a retired internist who recently was affiliated with Bridgton Hospital and Central Maine Medical Center, Andersen is CEO and vice chairman of Androscoggin Bank’s board of directors and Crowell is assistant city manager for the city of Auburn.

Shannon Richards was elected to the board of directors of the Maine Real Estate & Development Association. Richards is the founder of Hay Runner, a real estate development company in Portland that provides services related to residential and commercial real estate transactions, project management, design, construction, furnishing and produces design centric events.

Achievements

Pierce Atwood, a law firm in Portland, announced its trusts and estates practice group received a “Band 1” ranking for Private Wealth Law by Chambers and Partners, a London-based publisher of guides to the legal profession. In addition, partners Molly Liddell and Barbara Wheaton were recognized individually with “Band 1” rankings. The firm also said 10 of its Maine-based attorneys were named to the U.S. News Media Group and Best Lawyers “2020 Best Lawyers in America” list.

U.S. Green Building Council announced that Geiger, a promotional products distributor in Lewiston, was awarded LEED Certification at the Gold level for its headquarters.

The Maine Town, City and County Management Association named Bangor City Manager Cathy Conlow the “Linc Stackpole Manager of the Year Award” winner at its 74th New England Management Institute.

Girl Scouts of Maine announced that Catherine Lamson and Quincy Hentzel were named “Girl Scouts of Maine Women of Distinction.” Lamson is senior vice president and chief administrative officer of the MEMIC Group and Hentzel is president and CEO of Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Southern Maine Community College in South Portland said its Cyber Security program was designated by the U.S. National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security as a “National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education” through 2024.

U.S. Sen. Angus King presented the inaugural “U.S. Sen. Angus King Award for Conservation Excellence” to Nancy Perlson, executive director of the Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust and the trust’s “Community Service Award” to Russell French, the Rangeley chief of police.

Berman & Simmons, a law firm in Portland, announced that attorney Susan Faunce was one of 18 attorneys selected nationally for the American Association for Justice 2019 Leadership Academy, an initiative to cultivate future leaders. Faunce leads the firm’s mass tort practice.

Skelton Taintor & Abbott, a law firm in Auburn, said eight of its attorneys were named to the U.S. News Media Group and Best Lawyers “2020 Best Lawyers in America” list.

Preti Flaherty, a law firm in Portland, said 34 of its Maine-based attorneys were named to the U.S. News Media Group and Best Lawyers “2020 Best Lawyers in America” list. In addition, Bruce Gerrity, administrative and regulatory law, Daniel Rapaport, personal injury litigation for defendants, and David Van Slyke, environmental law, were named “Lawyer of the Year” honorees.

Amy Bowen, a business insurance account manager at Allen Insurance and Financial in Belfast, achieved the designation of “Accredited Customer Service Representative in Commercial Lines” from the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America.

Eaton Peabody, a law firm in Bangor, said 21 of its attorneys were named to the U.S. News Media Group and Best Lawyers “2020 Best Lawyers in America” list. In addition, Michael Hodgins, land use and zoning law, and David Wakelin, employee benefits law, were named “Lawyer of the Year” honorees.

Town & Country Federal Credit Union in Scarborough announced that Michael Jackson, director of strategic initiatives, completed the Credit Union National Association’s Management School, a three-year, executive education program.

Readiness Associates, a preparedness and risk mitigation firm in Portland, said COO Bruce Brauninger presented at the New Mexico Health Care Association/New Mexico Center for Assisted Living 2019 Convention and Exposition in Albuquerque, N.M.

Shaheen & Gordon, a law firm in Portland, said Randall Smith, medical malpractice law: plaintiffs, was named “Lawyer of the Year” in the U.S. News Media Group and Best Lawyers “2020 Best Lawyers in America” list. Peter Schroeter was also recognized as a “Best Lawyer” in his practice, mediation.
