NMDC gets $200K fed grant to boost manufacturing

The Northern Maine Development Commission is among the first to receive a federal grant through a new program aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker announced Wednesday that the NMDC will receive $200,000 to help the Biomass Clean Tech Manufacturing Cluster Strategic Plan, which intends to advance the design and manufacture of biomass heating devices in northern Maine.

The Maine group is one of 44 award recipients sharing $7 million from the first round of funding through the federal Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership program. The program, first announced in April, aims to expand investment in manufacturing in the country. Later this year it  will launch a competition to select 10 communities as “Manufacturing Communities,” which will gain an advantage in getting grant money through 10 federal programs and other agencies.
