Northern Light Acadia Hospital hires new president

Brewer-based Northern Light Health has selected its next senior vice president of Northern Light Acadia Hospital after a national search.

Northern Light Acadia Hospital
Mark Lukens

Mark Lukens will officially begin his role at Acadia Hospital on July 17 after relocating to Bangor with his family.

Before he joined Northern Light Acadia, Lukens was president and CEO of Behavioral Health Services North Inc. in Plattsburgh, N.Y. He was also president and CEO at Community, Work & Independence in Glens Falls, N.Y.

“It was clear from Mark’s impressive experience and background that he is well-suited to lead Acadia at this critical time and further its mission of helping people to improve their lives,“ said Northern Light Health President and CEO Tim Dentry. “From his earliest days as a paramedic to his most recent work leading a multi-faceted behavioral health organization that covers 7,000 square miles in upstate New York, Mark is both compassionate to those in need of mental health services and adept at leading organizations with vision and purpose. I am excited for the future of our Behavioral Health program under Mark’s leadership.”

Lukens received his associate's and bachelor's in pre-med from the University of South Florida and received his master's in business from Eastern University.

According to a recent release, several candidates from a variety of backgrounds were interviewed for the position. The process was guided by a search committee chaired by Shirar Patterson, vice-chair of the Acadia Hospital board of trustees, and involved providers, nurses, clinicians and team members from many areas throughout the hospital, as well as Northern Light Health system board members, donors, and community leaders.

Northern Light Health is an integrated health care system comprising 10 member hospitals with 987 licensed beds; a single physician-led medical group; eight nursing homes with 585 long-term beds; five emergency transport members and 37 primary care locations. The company employs more than 12,000 people in Maine.

Northern Light Acadia Hospital is No. 9 among the largest Maine’s largest hospitals according to the 2023 Mainebiz Book of Lists. That ranking is based on the number of licensed acute care beds.
