Penobscot's slot hopes dashed

The Penobscot Indian Nation's bid to operate slot machines on its reservation near Old Town has been killed, as the Legislature yesterday was unable to muster enough support to override Governor John Baldacci's veto.

The House's 94-49 vote for the measure fell short of the necessary two-thirds majority to override Baldacci's veto of the bill, which would have allowed the Penobscot Nation to operate 100 slot machines at its high-stakes bingo facility on Indian Island, the Bangor Daily News reported. In vetoing the bill on Tuesday, Baldacci held to his stance that an expansion of gambling in Maine must be approved by voters through a referendum process.

The Senate and the House both passed the measure last week, according to the paper.
