Pipeline operator says Canadian oil could flow south

Portland Pipe Line Corp. CEO Larry Wilson told Vermont lawmakers Tuesday that his company is prepared to reverse its South Portland-to-Montreal pipeline to carry oil from Canadian tar sands south.

The Associated Press reported that Wilson told the Vermont House Fish, Wildlife and Water Resources Committee that the company has no definite plans to reverse the flow of its pipeline to carry tar sands but that the company hopes to have a plan for the pipeline in the near future.

Reversing the flow of oil for tar sands, he said, "is an option we would absolutely consider," the AP reported.

The latest comments come as cities around Maine continue to plan hearings and consider resolutions around the transportation of tar sands through Maine, according to the Kennebec Journal. The potential plan has raised concerns from activists in the state who are lobbying local governments to oppose a tar sand pipeline through the state, saying it would pose health dangers.

Though no specific proposal is on the table, the possibility has brought a Portland Water District committee to hold a special hearing tonight on implications of transporting tar sands through Maine, according to the Portland Daily Sun.
