Poll: Close post offices, but keep USPS

Four out of five Mainers oppose eliminating the U.S. Postal Service, but many support closing some locations and other cost-saving measures.

According to a survey from Market Decisions Inc., 84% of Maine residents strongly oppose eliminating the USPS, and another 9% somewhat oppose the move. But 57% support closing or consolidating post offices, and 65% support eliminating Saturday delivery. A majority of respondents also supported expanding the types of services the USPS can provide and renting or leasing post office buildings. Portland-based Market Decisions surveyed 400 people between Oct. 5 and Oct. 25.

Earlier this week, the USPS unveiled a plan to cut $3 billion, which includes closing 250 of its 500 mail processing centers and extending the time first-class mail is received from next-day to two to three days, according to The Associated Press.
