Portland expects 27% increase in cruise ships

Portland is expecting to host 74 cruise ships with more than 82,000 passengers this season — an increase that a city official attributes to Portland’s growing popularity and a recently completed dredging project.

The Portland Press Herald reported the figure is up 27% over last season’s 58 ships that visited Portland’s harbor. The passenger figure is a 15% increase over last season. Portland’s cruise ship season began May 30 and ends in October.

Bob Leeman, Portland’s cruise ship marketing manager, told the newspaper that the increases can be attributed to the city’s growing allure as a cruise ship destination. He added that the $9.2 million dredging project completed this year has also increased Portland Harbor’s capacity for larger ships.
